Tractor Repair: case 2670 trans issues, case 2670, torque limiter

Question
Hi and thanks for your time.I have a 1979 2670 with 3900 hrs that i got last year from the original owner.Changed all the filters after purchase and it worked perfect until last week.It was ran over the summer but had no load behind it.With fall work starting we hooked it to a set of discs and it pulled through all 3 powershift gears then slowed down to a stop.Push in the inching pedal and then release after a few seconds and it moves again. It will also stop in any range with a load but will move on its own unloaded.Trans pressure stays in the green range and temp is ok.Looking at the hyd sight levels when wou put the clutch in the oil goes down out of sight, when you let it up the oil comes back up with slight bubbles.I am a auto mechanic so I have done all the basics I can think of.My instinct says that it must be starving for oil that is not returning to the reservior,I do have the service manuals but in the check chart nothing fits this issue.Aftersitting cold you can pop the clutch and it engages normally and through the powershift ranges shifts the usual harsh way but after 2 or 2 tries the shifts get softer.Have my fingers crossed.Thanks.

Answer
Hello,
It sounds like the problem is not with the powershift.
If the transmission pressure gauge is in the normal range in all 3 powershifts, but it slips under load in all 3 powershifts, then the torque limiter is slipping and will have to be replaced.  It's bolted to the flywheel like a clutch, so the engine will have to be removed.  Sometimes the bolts come loose or break off on the torque limiter, and sometimes the disks are just worn out.  The flywheel will have to be resurfaced if it is worn.  They usually are better when it is cold and slip worse after the tractor warms up.  The oil level in the sight glass will always move up and down and have bubbles when the engine is running, so don't worry about that.  You can only check with the engine shut off.

                   Good luck,
