Tractor Repair: gears stuck on 560 International, expert mechanic, international question

Question
QUESTION: I was shifting from reverse to first gear and now it will not go into any gear. It seems like first and third gear are trying to engage and have stuck and I can't get them to move or release. What do I need to tear into to fix this problem?

ANSWER: Hello,

Unbolt the shift lever assembly from the top of the transmission and remove it.  Look down into the hole and pry the shift rails back to neutral with a screwdriver.  Bolt the shift lever back on and you should be good to go.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick response. I have tried that and still cannot get them to budge. I am afraid something is broke. Is there an easier access to the area other than removing the seat and the thick plate under the seat. Would it be a job for an expert mechanic? I am very mechanical but don't want to take on a job I can't finish. Thanks.

Answer
Hello,

If you can't move the shift rails through the shift lever hole, then possibly a shift fork or shift rail is broken.  There is no other way to fix it than removing the top of the transmission.  I would suggest having a repair shop fix it, but that decision is up to you.
