Tractor Repair: ford 2000 hydralics 1962, bush hog, 2 extremes

Question
QUESTION: The hydraulics seem to sensitive. I have a hard time keeping the bush hog at a constant level. The movements are all within an inch or so. That's when I move the control lever. So if I move the lever an 1/2 inch it will move to high and and over corrects. Fluid level is good. This is a new tractor to me. I have an I&T manual it says the control valve could be sticking. Not really wanting to open up the hydraulic cover if I don't have too.
Last thing the bush hog is a 4' made for a compact tractor.I know the spacing of the three pt hitch is narrower and lower on compoact implements, not sure if that matters at all.
Sincerely Mark Smith

ANSWER: Hello,

Sorry, but I don't know of any other way to fix it than to remove the lift cover to access the control valve.  There are no external adjustments that I'm aware of that would correct this problem.  I don't think the Bush Hog is part of the problem.  There could be something worn or sticking in the control valve or linkage like the book suggests.  If you have already tried moving the sensitivity control toward draft instead of position, then the only thing left is repairs to the valve or linkage.

QUESTION: Thanks for responding so quickly. I have moved the  the draft control all the way down. Not sure how to use this feature. I assumed it was an all or none lever nothing in between. So please advise me thanks again. If I need to pull the cover is there any trick I need to know about.

Answer
The draft lever will make the hitch more responsive to either the control lever or the draft sensing linkage.  In position control, it responds only to the lever, and in draft control is less responsive to the lever and more responsive to changing soil conditions and contours to automatically adjust the hitch height to maintain uniform tillage depth with a mounted implement.  The draft lever can be set anywhere in between the 2 extremes to try to get the desired results.  If you have no operator's manual, it would be a good idea to get one as they have lots of useful information that even very experienced farmers are not aware of sometimes.  I'm not aware of any special procedures for removing the lift cover, but start lifting it slowly and carefully until you are sure nothing internally is connected.
