tractor started runing rough after getting warmed up and would just quit. also battery was dying. I cant remember in what order but replaced generator with one wire altenater and replaced coil. when I replaced coil It started poping and backfiring I was wandering if I needed A resistor or does the oe coil have one built in? I have also replaced points condensor, dist. cap, rot.button, plugs and wires and cleaned fuel system. nothing seems to work. HELP PLEASE!!!Going broke fast!

Answer
 Hello,

Make sure the coil polarity is correct.  The wire from the key switch should go to the + terminal, and the wire to the points should go to the - terminal.  Recheck the points, as they may have become burnt if the polarity is incorrect.  Make sure the point gap is .020 inch.  If this problem started after replacing the coil, it must be related to that.  Also a defective condenser will cause the same problem.  I have seen this many times, even having brand new condensers that were no good.  Also check the ignition timing.  I don't know about the resistor.
