Tractor Repair: Case 585 1990 Model, gasoline motors, gravity flow

Question
Periodically when fuel gets low and we are operating on a grade, the tractor
quits and we are unable to get it restarted.  Have already checked both fuel
filters and they are primed and get good gravity flow.  Have cracked fuel lines
on top of motor and can't get fuel on top either by gravity flow or by using
gasoline rag to crank motor.  This has happened before and we have had to
have mechanics come out and fix it but we don't know what they do and it's
getting expensive.  It seems like there should be a way to prime the injectors
but we don't know how.

In the past, we have sent the tractor to a tractor dealership and they
supposedly cleaned out the fuel tanks since the tractor is older and was not
used for a couple of years.  We had this problem both before and after the
dealership and not always when operating on a grade, but always when low
on fuel.  We think the diesel tank is called an H tank.  I am a beginner farmer
with no diesel experience but pretty handy with gasoline motors.

Answer
Hello,

If this model has a mechanical lift pump to pump the fuel from the tank to the injection pump, make sure it's working.  Otherwise, it will lose prime when the fuel level drops too low.  Make sure all fuel lines are in good shape and all fittings are tight to prevent air being drawn into the system.  The only way to bleed the air from the injection pump and injector lines is to loosen the injector line fittings on all injectors and crank the engine over like you're trying to start it until fuel with no bubbles comes out.  Then tighten them back up.
