Tractor Repair: head instalation, head gasket, fire rings

Question
I installed sleeves in a Farmall super A(1952) tractor. The top of the sleeve is slightly higher than the block. Is this right?

Answer
  Hello,

Yes, the sleeves must protrude slightly above the block for the fire rings on the head gasket to seal properly.  The spec is .003" to .005" protrusion.  If you have more than that, you might have coolant leakage.  If you have less, you might have compression leakage.  Make sure the head and block are absolutely flat, have it resurfaced if necessary.  Check the head and block for cracks.  Do not put any type of sealer on the new gasket, use it as it is.
Retorque the head after running the engine up to normal temperature.
