Tractor Repair: Farmall Super A governor, vacuum leak, throttle lever

Question
Do you know how to set the governor?  Currently when the tractor needs more gas (going up an incline, etc.) the governor tries to accelerate.  the problem is it tries too hard and often stalls the engine w/ full throttle.

Answer
  Hello,

If the governor is trying to give it more throttle when it's under load, then it's working OK.  If the engine stalls when it tries to accelerate, then the problem is with the carburetor or fuel supply, not the governor trying too hard.  The governor should be able to open the throttle wide open without stalling the engine.  Make sure you are getting a full flow of fuel from the tank, not just a little dribble.  Make sure the carburetor is clean and adjusted properly.  Make sure you have good fresh fuel in the tank.  I'll bet that when it starts to stall, pulling out the choke part way will keep it running.  Then you know it's not getting enough fuel. Make sure the carburetor and intake manifold mounting bolts are tight, or you could have a vacuum leak.  As far as adjusting the governor, disconnect the rod between the governor and carburetor.  Put the throttle lever at full throttle.  Hold the carburetor butterfly at wide open.  You should be able to reconnect the rod without moving anything.  If not, then adjust the length of the rod until it fits back on.  You can verify that it's adjusted correctly, but that's not going to solve the stalling problem.
