Tractor Repair: JD 2155 Clutch, plate surface, oil leak

Question
We have a JD 2155 and the clutch is slipping.  We had a similar problem with our JD 4000 last year and I was able to adjust the clutch so there was more play and that was fine.  This clutch already had enough play.  It is particularly noticeable in higher gears and when we  have a load of manure in the spreader.  Does this mean I have to replace the clutch?

Answer
  Hello,

Well, I'm sorry to tell you that if the clutch is adjusted properly with enough pedal free play, and if it still slips, then yes the clutch will have to be replaced.  The springs on the pressure plate could be weak, or the clutch lining, pressure plate surface, and flywheel could be worn down.  Also, an oil leak from the engine or transmission could get oil onto the friction surfaces of the clutch, making it slip even if it's not worn out.

          Good luck,
