Tractor Repair: Farmall M, steering gearbox, penetrating oil

Question
I need to know how to remove the head of this tractor.  I have part of it off, but I'm not sure how to lift it off.

Answer
  Hello,

If you have part of it off, I'm assuming you mean the manifold.  Remove the steering shaft to give you room over the top of the engine.  There's a cover on the front of the steering gearbox, that the shaft will pull forward through after disconnecting the universal joint.  Remove the valve cover and rocker arms and push rods.  Remove the water temp. tube.  Remove the stud nuts that hold the head on to the block.  Spray penetrating oil around all the studs and soak them.  The studs are usually rusted, making head removal difficult.  Lifting the head with an engine hoist or a winch makes it alot easier to break it loose and raise it up over the studs.

             Good luck,
