Tractor Repair: MOTION DRIVE BELT INSTALLATION, transmission pulley, forward gear

Question
I have a model 917.274953 21 hp 46" craftsman garden tractor. I have replaced the Motion Drive V Belt according to the diagram in my manual.  Now the gears don't operate properly.  When I put it in reverse, it moves forward. When I put it in any forward gear, it goes into reverse.  Is this a transmission problem or did I install the belt incorrectly?

Answer

   Hello,

Yes, the drive belt has to be on the wrong way and the transmission pulley is being driven backwards.  It's not a transmission problem.  Recheck the diagram to make sure you have it exactly as shown, or else the diagram is wrong.  I see lots of mistakes in manuals.  If you still can't make it work correctly, contact a small engine / mower repair shop, or contact Sears service.
