Tractor Repair: MF 165 diesel w/multi power & IPTO, clutch pack, piston seal

Question
Thanks for your quick response, very helpful, does an auxillary pump supply the multipower and IPTO, you suggest repairing the multipower first are you referring to the split torque clutch the m/p control valve or both. thankyou!

Answer

  Hello,

I'm not sure if there's a separate pump just for the pto and multipower on this model.  Like I said in my profile, I don't claim to be a MF expert.  The multipower can leak in a couple of places.  The piston seal for the multipower clutch pack can leak in Hi, causing low pto pressure.  There is no pressure supplied to the multipower in Low, so if the pressure to the pto is low with the multipower in Low, either the pto clutch is bad or the oil supply from the pump is bad.  Also, there are 4 steel sealing rings on the input shaft that can wear grooves into the retainer causing low pressure to the entire regulated circuit.  My guess is that the multipower clutch and the pto clutch are both worn from running with low pressure for too long.  I doubt that there is a problem in the multipower control valve, but then again, nothing is impossible.  The only way there could be a problem with the split torque clutch is if you notice slippage to the drive wheels in both Hi and Low multipower speeds.  If there's slippage in only one speed, the split torque clutch is OK.

       Hope this helps,
