Hi ?
I get a vast amount of questions on this subject –poor starting—
Check battery Voltage with a meter if you can. A good 12v battery should read about 12.5 –13.5v when fully charged.

The problem usually comes down to poor electrical contacts at the battery and also the starter connections. These wires seem to corrode especially when left unattended for any length of time, might be a good idea to disconnect the main + lead if you do not expect to use this machine for a few weeks.
Anyway disconnect know and polish these wire ends and also the main battery posts reconnect with a little copper grease or Vaseline over the connections.
Also check all other connection visually.
Also some meters have a continuity setting --- when the 2 contacts are made  + -
They ring a bell or buzzer this can be used to check if the current is getting through from a to b.
Good luck.

QUESTION: Since my tractor a grey market, it's hard to find the specs for it.  With regard to the battery, what's the recommended / minimum / maximum for cranking amps and cold cranking amps?  Do I use an auto battery or marine battery, or does it matter?

Answer
HI
OK as to the manual you could possibly match to a similar size engine in another make there is bound to be one some were.
You may well find that these details are stamped on a lable on the side or tope of the battery.
An auto battery should be ok but check that it will actually fit in its recess on the tractor.
Cant say what the amps would be.
