Tractor Repair: Craftsman Drive belt question, craftsman lawn tractor, clutch mechanism

I have an older Craftsman lawn tractor that I just put a new drive belt on. Question is...
Now the thing rattles like crazy. I tap or enagage the clutch even a little bit and it stops/quiets. I  safely looked underneath while it was running and saw that its the belt slapping around like crazy and slapping the clutch mechanism. and rattling it. How can I stop it from rattling? I am tired of driving around the yard with a foot slightly pressing the clutch in a little. It hurts my leg! Thanks Gary!

Hi Gary.
It sound like some more adjust ment is required probably on the clutch operating mechanism its self. Do you have a handbook?

The other thought is that you may have been given the wrong belt if it is to long this would do exactly as you say it does ___?
Can you check it up against the old one making allowances for the ware.
Suppose the pullies are in good order and their own bearings. Turn the machine on its side and have a good check DON’T LOSE ALL YOUR PETROL.
