Question -
I have an MTD 12hp lawn tractor model 135M679G062.

I had to  replace the battery at the beginning of summer.  Lately, every time I tried to start it the battery was dead. I would slow charge it and it would start again but the charge would not hold.

The last time I was mowing it ran out of gas. I filledd it and tried to restart but it would not even crank.

It would seem the battery drains while sitting idle (and even while running!). Is there a current regulator on this mower that could be faulty?

Would appreciate any help you can give me.

Answer -
Yes, it does have a regualtor - follow the wiring from the ignition and this will take you to it.  Also check the ignition switch and starter for electical shorts.

Answer
The easiest way to check for an electrical draw on your system is --- charge the battery completely - unplug the item you are testing - hook up a volt/ohm meter to the battery - set it to volts - over a period of time watch for a draw --- your can eliminate any electrical component by this method - until you find your draw.
