I have a question which is VERY similar to a posting that was made on 12/20/2004(attached below).  Same 1998 Craftsman lawn tractor with 15.5 Kohler engine and same problem in that I reversed the terminals when I replaced the battery.  My problem now is that I am constantly blowing 30amp fuses (sometimes right away when I put a new one in and turn the key; and other times a few minutes after I start the engine).  I don't howewer think I have the same continual discharge problem and I did NOT modify any wiring.

Any idea on what I should do to get this resolved?
Thanks!

"I have a 1998 Craftsman lawn tractor with a 15.5 Kohler engine. I recently replaced the battery but accidently reversed the polarity it caused a 30amp fuse to blow. After realizing what I did I corrected it but continued to blow that fuse!. I think I replaced every electrical "plug in" module including the igintion switch but still had the problem. Finally I replaced the battery with correct one and was able to get it started but now the amp meter shows a continual discharge.
My question: is there some type of "alternator" and regulator on the Kohler engines? If so where would they be located so that I can replace either item? Also, the lights are not working now either but the bulbs seem "OK"

Thanks for your help

Chris check that the wiring is not burnt and fused together if you do not have a problem there it may be that the charge module under the fly wheel may be damaged by reversed polarity.
Disconnect the wires that come out from under the fly wheel and see if the fuse still blows you can start and run the tractor but it wont chage to check the problem out.
If this is the case replace the module or the charge coil which ever is damaged.

Thanks Danny.  I did some troubleshooting on this and I found the following:
If I disconnect the wiring plug that contains BOTH the wiring for the ignition/spark plug AND the alternator/charger then the fuses stop blowing(it is one of those 4 wire integrated plugs so if you disconnect it then all 4 wires are disconnected as a unit).  I then tried pulling the spark plug out and plugged this wiring plug back in.  After this, I put new fuses in and they did not blow?

Kind of strange.  Does this help you triangulate any further on the answer?

Thanks again!
Chris

Answer
Chris it sounds like it is in the charge module or the charge coil under the fly wheel as I do not have a wiring diagram of your tractor it would be better to call an auto electrician.
We are now getting into some technical testing to work out which section it is with the problem so pay a little now and save the pain in the future I feel is better.
