Question -
I HAVE A 1969 FARMAL 856 DIESEL AND TIS WINTER WHEN WE HAD SOME VERY COLD WEATHER WE WENT TO USE THE TRACTOR AND IT WOULD NOT STEER WE HAD NO BRAKES OUR LOCAL DEALER TOLD ME THAT HE THINKS WE NEED A NEW MCV PUMP AND I AM LOOKING FOR A SECOND OPINION AND IF YOU THINK THAT IS WHAT I NEED WHERE COULD I GET A PICTURE BREAK DOWN OF THIS PUMP AND THE PROCEDER FOR REPLACING I WOULD BE VERY GREATFUL FOR ANY HELP OR ADVICE I CAN GET THANK YOU VERY MUCH BILL
Answer -
Bill i am not conversent with your model tractor as we do not have many Farmall tractors in Australia.
How ever we do get the International 856 and this had a valve which is called a priority valve this allows the brakes and steering to get oil before the other hydraulic circuits.
This valve is possibly where your trouble lies it is located on the left hand side of tranmission on the International tractors.
You unscrew a plug at the base of the hydraulic block and there is a spring pushing on the valve it is possibly stuck this valve needs to be loose in casing DO NOT REMOVE ANY MORE THAN THE BURRS ON THE VALVE SO IT IS FREE IN ITS HOLE OK Bill.
As this will render the valve and block usless so you can use some 1200 wet and dry paper to remove the small marks burrs etc.
Bill hope this information is a help but most dealer like to spend your money and tell you the dearest item and if it is the priority vale they still charge for the pump and they are infront and you are out of pocket many dollars.

Answer
Bill as I said we do not get the farmall 856 we get International 856 I am not sure if this is the same tractor.
The priority valve on 856 inter goes up from under the hyd block which is on the left hand side as you sit on the seat under the foot plate the hydraulic filter is mounted on this hyd block also the spool for the pto clutch as well.
Bill i'm sorry I can not give much more information than this as my International experiance is limited very limited.
Again Bill hope this helps your repair matey.
