Tractor Repair: Super M oil leaking, and overfull, cracked head, gear lube

Question
I have a IH Farmall Super M and was working on
straighting out my snow bucket(I hit a stump
the last time out) and I noticed oil dripping on the snow. It was oozing out of some device just
in front of and somehow connected to the carb. I
checked the oil and it all looked like tar and
was way over full!
I live in Wis., I am 47 and have been fixing
car's, truck's, cycle's, etc. since I was a kid,
but I know nothing about tractors, this is my 1st
and I bought it last summer.
So my question is what is that device, (I don't
have a manual of any kind) and what could be wrong? Cracked head?, the oil does not look or
smell like gas or anti-freeze, although it has
been going through coolant lately, and overheated
once. The oil looks and smells like gear lube.
So any advice would be much appeciated.
            Thank's, Larry.

Answer
Larry hi im Danny on reading your email im sure that it is not connected with hitting the stump ok.
I feel it is a internal engine problem with out looking at the machine it sounds like it could be a corroded liner this can happen even if you have inhibbitor in radiator i feel that the item infront of the carbie is the govenor control and it is over full of oil as is the engine.
Larry if the oil is a thick and milky colour i think it is a liner problem the easiest way to check is loosen sump plug annd maybe take it out if nothing comes out when you loosen it water may come out if this is so you will need to strip it down to find the problem.
