Tractor Repair: pto, massey ferguson 285, hometown aol


Question
I have a massey ferguson 285 while baling my hay. the pto seens to have started making my tractor labor real hard as if there is a brake on the pto. It is so bad i can not even bale a conplete bale. what does it sound like to you.
p.s. I had to finish bailing with a massey 255

Hi Alan
  If you have Independent PTO which a lot of MF285s do have it has a brake that engages when you disengage the PTO. It is not a very big brake & I have never saw one cause the PTO to do what you say yours is doing & don't think it would even if it was applied. I suspect you may have a bearing bad that is trying to lock up when it gets hot. One thing I have made several sevice call for was the the lift arem were raised to high causing the pump to go in to constant pumping that will cause them to do like your is doing. It will load the engine to where it has no power left to work with. Hope This helps some. Check out My Massey Ferguson web site It could have some things that will be of help to you on it.
