Tractor Repair: lawn tractor wii not start, small engine mechanic, murray lawn tractor

Question
I have a 1992 14.5 hp Murray lawn tractor. The engine is the 180 degree opposed twin cylinder.
I've used it twice this season and it started fine. The flywheel turns well but there is no spark at the plugs.
What should I do to find and correct the problem now?

Answer
Hi Jim
I am really not a small engine mechanic by no long shot & I have not work on one of those engines in 10 or 12 years. They used two different types of ignition system at that time one had an external coil with a solid state pick up for the magnet on the flywheel. The other use a magneto built in the fly wheel. My guess is you have a bad pick unit. I had to put one on my MTD last year that is about the only thing I have found that cause this problem. Sorry I could not be of more help Big Dean
