Triumph Repair: tr7 ignition system, delco system, ac delco

Question
I have a 1980 Triumph Tr7 2.0  and it has the AC Delco Ignition system .  It seems that either my coil or module went south.I cant seem to find a replacement for it . Everything I'm finding is a canister looking coil and it doesn't look like the original. The question I have is, do I have to change the whole Ignition System, including distributor, cap and rotor, or can I just go with the replacement canister only??? Please help.

Answer
Hi Eddie,

Moss Motors use to carry the Delco ignition parts so you should contact them to see if they still do. Or they may have an aftermarket system to change over to if they no longer have the parts. They didn't have the coil but did list the module part number 072-465.
The primary winding of the coil was 0.75 ohms. I don't have the secondary winding figures.

There were several aftermarket systems to replace the earlier Opus/Lucas system as I run across several different types while working on the TR-7s. I don't remember seeing any replacements for the Delco system but that don't mean there were not any available.

Moss Motors and an Internet search would be your best possible search. I had several Tr-7s myself and I even converted a Opus/Lucas distributor to a pointed system once. (a lot of work though)

If you try to switch to the older distributor check the angle of the gear teeth to be sure they are the same as there was a change in the angle of the teeth on the jack shaft that drives the water pump and the distributor. But I don't remember what year the change was. Moss may be able to help there too as they are good about what changed when.
