Triumph Repair: 1977 Spitfire 1500 CA smog equipment and factory manifold, smog equipment, ca dmv

Question
QUESTION: Good day Sir!

My wife has a 1977 Spitfire 1500 we want to get back on the road.  The previous owner removed the CA smog equipment and factory exhaust manifold and replaced it with a header.  We live in a county that requires bi-annual inspection and certification.  Where can I get a definitive answer as to the equipment required, and a place to purchase the replacement parts to get her back on the road?

Any links to websites, e-mail addresses with names of individuals that could help would be greatly appreciated.  We are also looking for a new complete wiring harness for the vehicle.  We have catalogs for her but not all of what we need is listed.

Please help with what you can.  I know it is a huge request but searching the WWW is a daunting task at times for older car parts and information.

Have a blessed and prosperous day!

Namaste,

Allen

ANSWER: Hi Allen,

I don't know what they actually look at in CA but in most states they only look (with a mirror) to see that it has a CAT in the exhaust system and inspect the gas cap seal and then test the tail pipe emissions. If the CAT had been removed with the original exhaust manifold you can still purchase a generic CAT and have it installed in the pipe close to the headers.

You should still check to see that the gas tank is vented to the charcoal canister and the vapors off of the float chamber of the carburetor and the fumes from the crankcase too.

You should call the CA DMV and ask if the original equipment needs to be there or just that everything meet CA standards and then you will know which way to do it.

If you have to put it back to factory configuration you have Moss Motors there in CA that are a good supplier of OEM and aftermarket parts if you have to go that rout.

QUESTION: Thank you for the quick response Howard.  Unfortunately CA DMV is lacking with desire and knowledge of Emissions requirements.  I am positive I will be required to have the air rail, charcoal canister and all related pumps etc on the vehicle as when it was new for CA Emissions.

Are you aware of a company that I can purchase a NOS or rebuilt wiring harness from.  Thank you very much for your time.

Namaste,

Allen

Answer
I think Moss Motors may have the harness or you can run a search on the Net as I once seen a company on the Internet that made harnesses for British cars but don't remember their name.

You are brave to even think about Nitrous on a Spitfire. I hope you are well experienced with Nitrous.
