Triumph Repair: MANUEL TRANSMISSION, manuel transmission, clutch problems

ON A 1978 TRIUMPH SPITFIRE MANUEL TRANSMISSION IS THE SHIFTER SUPPOSE TO PULL UP WHEN PUTTING IN REVERSE I HAVE ONE JUST DID SOME BRAKE REPAIR ON AND NOW CUSTOMER STATES THAT IT PULLED UP IN REVERSE WHICH GOES RIGHT AND UP WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE SOME HELP NOT UP TO PAR AND DID NOT DRIVE DUE TO BRAKES WERE LOCKED UP VEHICLE HAD BEEN SITTING FOR 10 YEARS JUST WANT TO CYA DUE TO STATING WE DAMAGED HAVE DRIVEN AND FEEL NO PROBLEMS GOOD TIGHT PATTERN.THANK YOU

Hi Frank,

Yes, the pattern for reverse is neutral to right and up then forward. There is nothing you could have done on the brakes to effect anything in the gearbox.

To enter all the gear positions setting still. you may have to rock the car forward and aft a little with the engine off.

I often received cars that had been in storage and most had the clutch stuck solid. The Spitfire is noted for clutch problems even when new.

If he can't enter reverse due to gears grinding then that is a clutch problem. If that is the complaint let me know and I will try to help with some procedures I used in dealerships that I worked in on Triumphs. Let me know.
