Triumph Repair: 71 Triumph Spitfire Transmission seal, input shaft, triumph spitfire

Question
Hi,

I'm rebuilding a 71 Spitfire. The transmission seems fine. However I've separated the bell housing from the transmission, mainly to clean things up.  I find a paper gasket between the two but no actual front seal that I can tell.  I find front seals listed for a GT6 and later transmissions for the Spitfire.  I am trying to figure out what keeps the front of the main shaft from leaking.

Many Thanks,

Wayne

Answer
Hi Wayne,

That is correct, there is a gasket between the bell housing and the gearbox but no seal. They use a oil deflector (oil slinger) behind the first motion shaft (input shaft) bearing. Just to deflect most of the splashed oil from migrating out the first motion shaft. The term "main shaft" refers to the shaft that extends from the first motion shaft out the rear of the transmission.
