Triumph Repair: gt6 mk3 carbs, shaft seals, stop screws

Question
I am rebuilding a '73 gt6 engine to put in my spitfire. The carbs were quite grungy so I am rebuilding them. The kit I got has a new seat for the metering needle but I cannot figure out how to remove the old ones. Also, what is the best way to remove and install the throttle shaft seals.

Thanks,

Darwin

Answer
Hi Darwin,

If you have the Stromberg carburetors that have the adjustable jets in the bottom then to replace the seats you have to unscrew the large brass center unit from the bottom that has the jet adjustment in it. If your carburetors just have a flat plug in the bottom of the float chamber, it does not have a replaceable seat.

It is best to remove the throttle plates first and extract the throttle shaft and then you can easily get the seals out and install the new ones. Be sure to back off the throttle stop screws and the fast idle stop screw when putting the throttle plates back in so you can seat the plate to the wall of the carburetor to get it centered correctly before you tighten the two screws holding the throttle plate to the shaft.
