Triumph Repair: 1973 spitfire, brake master cylinder, color letters

Question
QUESTION: I recently replaced the ignition switch and all was good, but after running a while a wire coming from the ignition switch started to heat up and melt under the hood by the brake master cylinder.  After that the car would crank but no fire then i unplugged the wire from the ignition switch and nothing?

ANSWER: Hi Jason,

You need a wiring diagram for your car and look at the color code of the burned wire to see where it goes from / to and see if you plugged the wrong wire into the wrong position or what happen.

If you don't have a diagram, let me know and I will post one on my web site for you to copy.

Answer
Jason, go to http://mg-tri-jag.net/73SpitUS1x1.jpg for the diagram and

A wiring diagram is exactly the same as a road map. It is not going to tell you that a wire runs next to a master cylinder but if you know the color code of the wire and you know it leaves the ignition switch, you can easily find it on the diagram and thus find out where it goes. This diagram also gives you the ID number on the switch that gets each wire. If you are not familiar with the color letters they are as follows.

W = white
N = Brown
W/K = White with a Pink tracer
W/R = White with a Red tracer
N/R = Brown with a red tracer
