Triumph Repair: Transmission, input shaft, drive shaft

Question
I have a 1980 Spitfire with a tranny that leaks oil. I also have a rebuilt 3 rail tranny from a 1974 spitfire. Is it any problem in installing the 3 rail in place of the single rail. Also I dont have the arm on the 3 rail for the throw bearing , can I use the one from the single rail.

Answer
Sorry Nick, I have never tried to make those swaps so I couldn't tell you. On the arm you may be able to find out by checking with some of the parts suppliers to see if the part numbers are the same on the two arms.

On the swap of the trans, I believe the bell housing bolt pattens were the same but you need to measure the input shaft to see that it fits the pilot bearing and check the overall length to see if the drive shaft needs to be changed. Same with the rear trans mount.

All my experience was in dealerships and we didn't do any part swapping and the few cars I have swapped parts on were not Spitfires.
