Triumph Repair: 73 Spitfire 1500, spitfire 1500, hub assembly

Question
Hello Howard:
I'm having a problem with my Spitfire. It seems like others have had similar problems with shifting thru 2nd gear; I didn't see any with resolution, so I thought I'd ask. All gears will function individually, but when I try to shift into second (either up or down) I hear grinding. If I'm at a stand-still, with low RPM's, I can shift into second and it will engage. Under normal driving conditions this isn't the case. I've also noticed that while in third, the transmission wants to pop out of gear when I'm accelerating/decelerating. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Answer
Hi mark,
Grinding going into 2nd gear is most likely worn syncro rings. Jumping out of 3rd gear can be one of several things. Either the shift fork (3rd/4th) is bent or worn. Or the splines on the sliding hub assembly and the gear can be worn Or the spacers between the gears on the main shaft could be worn. Or any combination of these.

The only way to know is to take the transmission apart and examine the parts very closely.
