Triumph Repair: Leaking Stromberg, plastic tabs, float chamber

Question

Stromberg bottom plug
Hi,

I have a 1975 Spitfire with a single CD Stromberg carb. She was running fine when I bought her, but didn't want to start several weeks after I got her (I had a lot going on and didn't get back to her). After several months, I finally got back to her today. Put a fresh battery on her, sprayed just a few hits of carb cleaner in the air intake and she started like a charm. Seemed to run on her own gas just fine in less than a minute. However, gas is flowing steadily out of the bottom of the carb onto the exhaust manifold. Not good. The bottom plastic plug seems very loose. Could it be just the o-ring? Looks like it is gone completely at the base of the plug. I put an oversize o-ring on it that stopped the leak enough to run her for a good while, but it seems too fat to allow the plug to lock into place. Probably just need the correct size o-ring?

Thanks,

Bill

Answer
Hi Bill,

As you can see the tangs on the plastic plug is what holds it in place. The "O" ring just fits in a smooth bore of the float chamber. If the tabs lock it in place and it don't leak it is ok. I found that the plastic tabs loose their ability to lock it in place after they get too old. I can't tell from your picture if you have the "O" ring in it's groove or up on it shoulder. The "O" ring belongs in the groove not up at the shoulder.
