Triumph Repair: tr7 starting problem, zenith stromberg, vacuum leaks

Question
I have an 1980 tr7 I purchased new.  I recently had the original zenith stromberg carberators rebuilt. The car ran rich and rough before the rebuild, but now it will not start on its own witout starting fluid.

A previous mechanic removed the emmisons system. Once the car starts it drives much better

We have looked for vacuum leaks and the fuel pump has been tested.

Any help, or ideas you have would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Stephen,
It sounds like the auto choke has failed (common). Moss Motors use to have a manual replacement for the auto choke system. The preliminary test for a failed auto choke system is to use starter fluid when starting and if it runs ok after warm up then that is the cause.

You can either attempt to repair the auto choke system or opt for the manual conversion from Moss Motors. I have installed several of the manual conversion units and was pleased with the results but it did require a little modification as I remember. I don't remember what it was but it was just a minor grinding a corner off of something to make it fit.
