Triumph Repair: converting a 69 GT6+ to J type O/D., clutch release, engine conversions

Question
Hi there, I have a J type overdrive with transmission out of a 77 spitfire that I wish to install in my 69 GT6. The driveshaft will need to be shortened, but I was wondering if the old GT6 bellhousing will hook up to the trans or does it need an adaptor?
I'm aware of the fabrication as the tail is longer on the J type, what about the wiring? Thanks in advance for your kind help.
Darren.

Answer
Hi Darren,

I have never tried to make that conversion but I have done other trans to engine conversions and I can tell you that it is a lot of work. (not bolt together work) Often a lot of machine and welding type work.

If you are going to try it this is what you need to measure.

Take the bell housing off of the trans and do a fit check to see if a plate is needed. (bolt patten and starter position.

Check the clutch hydraulic line for a fit as the slave is in a different position on the bell housing on the two you are working with.

Measure the length and diameter of the end of the first motion shaft to see that it is going to fit in the pilot bearing.

Check the clutch spline to see if you need to change disks.

Measure the distance from the back of the engine to the pad area of the pressure plate and compare that with the same distance to the clutch release bearing surface.

Confirm that the pressure plate does not foul on the new bell housing.

Look at the rear transmission mounts to see if any modification is necessary.

Measure the position of the shift lever to see that the shift lever will come through the tunnel in the same position.

Open your wiring diagram of the car and note where the low & reverse lock out switch is to see if you need to do any wiring. The solenoid of each operate the same but are in a different place.

You already noted that you need to measure the distance from the trans to the diff. and have a local driveshaft company add or subtract length and check the flange pattern.

Good luck,
Howard
