Triumph Repair: Triumph TR7 3rd gear teeth, gear teeth, shift forks

Question
3rd gear teeth
3rd gear teeth
QUESTION: Howard,

Here's a shot of the 3rd gear teeth, I have others from different angles if this doesn't help.

  Thanks,

  Steve.

ANSWER: What I can see in your picture, the sides of each spline does not look to be badly worn or beveled so I would guess you need to look more toward end free play in the gears and look at the shift forks for being bent and/or worn.

QUESTION: Howard,

Well, that's good news, I've attached a photo of the 3/4 shift fork - right side, and rear that rubs against the shift hub.  It seems ok to me, how can I check for it being bent - put a straight edge across the flats of both forks to see if they line up ?

Thanks again,

 Steve.

Answer
Most that I have looked at that were bent looked bent and by holding the fork on it's rail and holding a small square on to the rail it is noticeable. The most common fault when the spline teeth look good and no worn or bent shift forks is excess end play in the gears on the main shaft. Also check to see that the forks are secured to the shift rails and that the detent balls and springs are in place. The only other thing I ran into was motor mount problems and forward/aft restricter cable adjustment. The engine and transmission can shift forward enough to have the shift boot and plate knock the shift lever out of gear, especially if incorrect shifting practices are used by the driver.
