Triumph Repair: triumph 76 Spitfire, rev range, good shape

Question
Just acquired this car - good shape, lots of fun - however,
seems engine won't go above 4000 rpm - just stays in that
range and to get up there one needs to be in 4th - alas no
overdrive - Single Stromberg carb, currently running super
rich (carbon on the rear bumper - any suggestions really
appreciated - thanks

I think you answered your own question.. the mixture is off on the car and it's getting too much gas (running rich).   That'll keep it from realizing it's full rev range.

If you've just picked up the car it's not a bad idea to go though the basics- spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor and make sure they're all in good shape.
