Triumph Repair: Engine oil reccomendations, triumph tr6, castrol oil

Question
1972 Triumph TR6 - What is the engine oil that should be used?   I was told to use a heavier weight oil, I am not so sure.

Answer
Hi Eric,
The weight of the oil should be matched with the condition and age of the engine. I usually advise people to use a multi grade oil and if it is a fresh or low mileage engine, use 10Wx30 weight and if it is a older engine with some ware on it to use 20Wx40 weight. Weather conditions also can change what you use. In the winter a car that uses 20Wx40 would find it too heavy a grade and they should switch to a lighter grade until next summer.

As for the brand, you should use what brand you want as long as it is a name brand and NEVER mix any other oil in it. ALWAYS change the filter every time you change oil and don't listen to those who tell you you can go longer between oil changes. 3000 miles should be your target. 500 miles on a fresh rebuild on the first change.

While it is true that you can't ware oil out but you do contaminate it and that is what destroys an engine and the best filter you can find will NOT filter it well enough to save your engine.
I use Castrol oil but have had good luck with Penns oil and Quaker State in the past.
