Triumph Repair: spitfire fuel leak, steady steam, float chamber

Question
I just replaced a failed fuel pump on my 1977 1500 Spitfire. The repair was successful. The car started and ran perfectly. However a puddle of gas started to form on the floor. I checked the pump and fuel lines they were not the source. I went to the passenger side and a steady steam of gas was coming from the bottom of the carburetor. There is a round brass disk on the bottom of the carburetor that moves when touched. This seems to be the area the gas is flowing from. I shut the car off and in a few seconds the leak stopped. I started the car again and the leak started again. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Hi Jay,
That Brass piece is a cap over a plastic plug in the bottom of the float chamber which is sealed by a rubber "O" ring. Sometimes the plastic piece cracks and some times the "O" ring gets hard and starts to leak. You need to remove the carburetor and remove the float chamber to repair it.

If you are not use to repairs like this you should find a British car specialist to make the repair.
