Triumph Repair: Rear whine, rear drive shaft, roller bearings

Question
Howard,
Had a rear drive shaft u joint and rear nearside bearing replaced today; that got rid of the low growl from the back however i now have a whine whose pitch increases with speed. Any thoughts appreciated - bedding in of new or something not put back properly?
Kind regards, Andy

Answer
Hi Andy,
The only way to ID a noise is to put the car on a lift and use mechanic's stethoscope and listen at each wheel bearing and the differential to locate the noise. Your symptoms are useless as everything in the whole drive train increases with speed. No bearing nor "U" joint needs any "bedding in". A noise is an indication of something wrong.
You never told me what kind of car this is. If it was a Spitfire and a set of roller bearings were replaced in the wheel bearing and a new axle was not replaced then that may be a possible cause because the axle is the inner race for the bearings. If a wheel bearing is bad then so is the axle. Many of the other Triumphs are different. It depends on what kind of car you have.
