Triumph Repair: TR6 smog equipment, smog emissions, dual carbs

Question
QUESTION: I recently acquired a '76 TR6. It's completely stock. I want to remove the smog/emissions equipment and get the engine running properly....right now, it won't idle without the choke. What do I do and what can I expect? Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: Hi Ted,
What system do you have? Two Stromberg carburetors with auto choke? or manual chokes?

Also I need you to explain what you mean, does it just die if it gets to low RPM but you can hold the throttle open just a little to make it idle?

Does it do this hot or cold? Does it run ok otherwise?

QUESTION: Sorry. I should have been more precise. It has a pair of Strombergs w. manual chokes. The car sat for ten years and is difficult to start. When it does fire up, it has a fluctuating idle, and dies if you apply throttle. Even when warmed up, it won't idle without some choke. Thanks again.

Answer
Hi Ted,
check the diaphragms in the carbs and be sure there is oil in the top pot and then use my tech tip on adjusting dual carbs on my web site. I wrote it for SUs but it is the same for Strombergs except you use a 3mm Allen down through the top to adjust the jets.
