Triumph Repair: 1974 tr6 [no gas in filter, fuel pressure gauge, cam lobe

Question
QUESTION: car wouldnt start today [started then died..looked like fuel filter was dirty so it was replaced..no gas at all is being loaded[its dry]..fuel pump was replaced a few months ago[new]

ANSWER: Hi Duane,
Replacing a part does not mean it works, it just means it's new. You need to put a fuel pressure gauge between the pump and the carbs in a "T" and spin the engine and watch the gauge. It should read from 1.5 to 3 PSI. If not remove the line from the tank at the pump and lower it below the level of the tank into a pan or container and note if fuel runs out freely. If not open the gas cap and use compressed air to blow back into the tank from the line at the pump and listen in the tank for the air to bubble in the tank. If not, look for a kink or crushed line between the pump and the tank.

If the fuel did run into a pan from the line at the pump then check the new pump. Some pumps required a spacer block and had a long pump arm and others did not require a spacer block and had a shorter arm. Also when installing the pump you need to be careful on some not to let the arm slip off to one side of the operating cam lobe when installing the pump.

Always test the end result before replacing any part. (in this case, fuel pressure)
let me know,
Howard

QUESTION: Turns out it was the pump. Replaced it & the car started right up. Took it for a 30 mi drive ...ran great. The only concern I have is the level of gas in the filter..looks like there is more air in there than usual..Thanks for your help,Duane

Answer
A empty space in a fuel filter is normal unless you bleed the air out. It does not affect the fuel flow.

In my opinion plastic fuel filters should be banned. Even a minor engine fire turns into a major fire when plastic fuel filters are present. If there is anything more dangerous than to put a small plastic can of gasoline in the environment of the engine compartment I would like to know what that is.
