Triumph Repair: Spitfire Starting Problem, jump leads, carbs

Question
Hi Howard.
I have a Spitfire IV with a 1500 engine.  The carbs have recently been balanced and timing done [not by me] with the result that the car runs very well.  However, starting it up is another matter and I can easily use up the battery in trying.  Jump leads and 5 minutes or so of turning the engine and playing with the choke will get it going.  I'm guessing it has been tuned too finely.....is there a simple remedy and how is it done. Many thanks if you can help!

Answer
Hi Mike,
You said it runs fine after you get it started but very difficult to start. This is easy to test, just spray a little starting fluid into the intake/s while someone tries to start the engine and if it fires off ok then it is for sure your choke is not working. You said carburetors so it is not a US version. So it has two carbs. Are they Strombergs or SUs? and what kind of choke does it have?
