Triumph Repair: 1976 triumph spirfire, triumph spitfire, fuel fire

i have just rebuilt my 1976 triumph spitfire  engine, it was put back in and wont fire. the timing was adjusted , and the carb keeps spiting out gas in the air. im not sure what to do, please give me a few options.

Are you saying it's backfiring?   Puffing gas out without igniting?   

The basics to get the car running are fuel, fire and time (ing).

Sounds like you're getting fuel, although maybe too much.   If you pull the dashpot top the fuel should be below the level of the jet (brass tube the needle goes down into).   If it's overflowing with the engine cranking then the float level is too high.

Positive you're getting spark?   If so.. did you check to see if the distributor is 180 degrees out?   Easy mistake to make.

You can try to move the distributor around while someone else cranks the car in order to get it started the first time.   Then you can fine tune.
