Triumph Repair: 73 Stag carbs, Stag, Stromberg

Question
Hello,  I have an all original 73 Stag with dual stromberg carbs.   Several people have told me that I mys put a drop of oil in the top jet areas of the carbs.   Should I?

Answer
Mitchie,

I suspect they're suggesting you should make sure the dashpots are topped up.

On the top of each carb in the center there should be a plastic cap.   Normally black, sometimes I've seen cars with white caps.   Shouldn't make a difference.

If you unscrew the cap there's a thin steel rod attached, with a metal bushing at the bottom end.   When you push the cap back in you should feel a faint resistance when you get to the bottom 1/2" or so.   If not, you need a bit of oil in there.  "full up" is when the oil is about 1" from the top of the carb.  No more than that.

Which oil to use?    That's the question.  There is an "official" oil for the CD (constant depression, the normal condition of a Triumph owner ;) but I've heard of everything from 3-1 oil to the engine oil you normally use to ATF transmission fluid being recommended.

I use the engine oil in mine.. saves me the worry (and expense!!) of some of the other recommendations.

If topping the dashpot is not what folks are suggesting, let me know.

Cheers,

Jim
