Triumph Repair: clutch problem, Spitfire, clutch

Question
One day I got in my 1975 spitfire 1500 having not driven it for no more than 5 days and found I could not put it into gear with the engine running. It is parked on a hill and it seems that when not running and in gear when I depress the clutch it starts to roll indicating that it must be lifting a little.
When I checked the fluid level it was very low so I have changed both the master and slave. However this only allowed me to get it into gear a couple of times before all I could get was grinding again.
Is there anything else I can do without having to take the gearbox out? And if I do have to where should I be expecting to find a fault? What parts should I buy first? The car is outside in the snow and I don't want to take it apart once to diagnose the problem then put it back together to only have to open it up again when I have the replacement bits!!

Answer
Oliver,

First off, when you push the clutch pedal, how quickly do you start to feel resistance?

You may need to rebleed the hydraulics again.  Making sure to top up the fluid first, of course.

Look for wear where the clutch pedal meets the push rod into the clutch master.  It's not unusual to have wear at the clevis pin, in both the pin and the pedal end and push rod.

If all those items check out then last possibility that it's something in the clutch/pressure plate/throw out bearing setup.

Cheers,

Jim
