Triumph Repair: 77 spitfires fuel sender float, Spitfire, gas tank sender

Question
Is there a "easy way" to replace the old unit with a new one? I get no measure at all on the gauge. I purchased this car after it sat for 20 years and others believe the original one sunk.

Drive the car until the gas tank is almost empty.   Then you can pull the sender unit from the trunk by removing the locking ring.

It's a good idea to have a new sealing gasket ready as the one in the tank is 30+ years old.

Take pictures (or mark with chalk/crayon/paint pen) the orientation of the sender unit before you pull it out.
