Triumph Repair: TR7 fuses, amp fuses, amp fuse

Question
Howard,

I have a 1976 TR7 - with a fuse box holding 4 fuses.  I have a blown one, but I can't tell the amperage.  Do you know what the amp rating is for all the fuses ?  There also appears to be 1 or 2 inline fuses.  I can't find the amp rating anywhere or what each fuse protects - I guess I could pull one out at a time and see what stops working !

  Thanks,

  Steve.

Answer
Hi Steve,
I don't have a listing of the amp rating on the older 4 fuse box, only the later 12 fuse box. The wiring in a TR-7 is mostly 14 ga wire and you should be able to use 50 amp fuses on all four fuses. The factory used a 35 amp on one of them but with 14 ga wire as used through the car you should be able to use 50 amp on all four. Use a 35 amp in the in-line fuse next to the fuse panel.
Fuses are used to protect the wiring and the TR-7 mainly uses 14 ga wire so you can use from a 35 to a 50 amp fuse. The only place they used a lower than 35 amp fuse is in the in-line fuse in the passenger's foot well for the heated rear glass and they used a 15 amp there. A radio in-line fuse is set by the radio manufacture which are usually very low amp.
