Triumph Repair: TR4A Front Lower Suspension Mounts, rust spots, suspension mounts

Question
Hi Howard,

I have read the front lower suspension mounts to the chassis are a real weak link in the TR4A frame.  Other than performing a visual inspection of these mounts (which look completely fine by the way) is there any other test or inspection I can perform to make sure they are not cracked or broken in any way?

I also read "the brackets are susceptible to the stresses of reversing swiftly then braking hard" - which is interesting because I hear a clicking/clunking in the front right suspension when I do exactly that.

Thanks,

Bob

Answer
Hi Bob,
Any cracks that start forming should have the associated rust spots thus be visible. Other than inspecting from time to time I don't know how else to spot any fatigue fractures except magnafluxing, which may not work on the painted area and require that the paint be removed in that area. Not worth the trouble.
You might seek out someone who races a TR-4A to see if they have a correction. I have not worked on enough TR-4As to run across any that have that problem and all of them were back when I worked in the dealerships.
