Triumph Repair: 79 Spitfire 1500, Ca. Spec. Emission Removal, emission inspections, mark iv

Question
I recently purchased a completely intact '79 Spitfire 1500 with california emission specs. The area where I live does not require emission inspections and I want to remove everything possible from the smog pump to the cat. I don't want to do anything that is going to cause my intake to get gummed up with oil or damage the engine in any way. I would like to know where I can get step by step instructions to removed the unneeded emission components. Thank you.

Answer
There isnt' a step by step guide that I am aware of.

The simplest approach is that anything not related to direct fuel delivery, ignition advance/retard and direct air intake to the carb can be removed.  Just cap or plug all the relevant "extra" holes.  Compare your car to an earlier 1500 or Mark IV picture of the engine compartment, like from a Vicky brit catalog or similar..  That should help you determine what is "extra" and not needed.

Get your hands on an earlier "log" manifold and exhaust manifold/header for a 1500 and that should be the most direct way to figure out what's not needed; there are no ports on those components, so it will be clear what can go.
