Triumph Repair: tr6, stromberg carbs, twin carbs

Question
my 1972 tr6 with twin stromberg carbs has aslight misfire and pinking both when accelerating and espcially when foot of accelerator and coasting. have noticed that the pipe from carb to vacuum unit is missing what problems does this cause and would replacing it cure my misfire

Answer
Les,

Twin carbs?  US spec model?

The '72 US Spec TR6 was equipped with a vacuum retard unit.  When it's working properly, it should retard the timing under accelleration and allow the timing to return to full advance under low load (coasting) conditions.

If the vacuum tube is missing it's likely that someone has attempted to time the car improperly and the timing is not set correctly.

Also, the vent tube on the carb will allow extra air in, potentially weakening the mixture.

Best route is to get the vacuum lines all set correctly, then have the car tuned by a professional.

Cheers,

Jim
