Triumph Repair: Triumph 2000 ignition problem, alternator belt, triumph 2000

Question
Hi there, i have a 1968 triumph 2000. Lately the ignition light (which i have just been informed is the low power light) has been on every time i drive.. What i wanted to know was, how do i determine if its the alternator the fuse or the wires that are causing the problem or need replacing, im hoping it is not the alternator, that could be expensive right? If it is, is it possible to use a more modern one? Mor efficent maybe... Thanks Regards Billy

Answer
Hi Billy,
I have no info on a Triumph 2000 but I would guess that it is the same as the other Triumphs of that year and the same as most British cars. My answer will have to be on them.

The "Ign." light is a charge light and means that you need to test the alternator. It is easy to do with a volt meter (not expensive) Place the volt meter across the posts of the battery and read battery voltage. (12v +) Now, start the engine and set the idle at about 1500 RPM (fast idle) and read the voltage again. It should read 13.8 to 14.5 volts. If it does not, check the alternator belt for tightness and check the large power wire from the alternator to the battery and check the engine ground from engine to frame and the battery cables for tightness. If everything checked ok and the fast idle voltage was low then you do have a alternator/regulator problem.
