Triumph Repair: 73 Spitfire Distributor tach area, roadster factory, moss motors

Question
Hello Scott:
Just bought a 73 Spitfire yesterday. Its' in really nice shape. I was having a problem with the tach (which was working earlier). It stopped working and I remember noticing that I could see a gear w/grease that looked like it couple the tach cable to the distributor. As I think about it now, there was probably an end-cap that had fallen-off. The problem now is that both the end-cap (?), and gear are missing - and the tach does not work. Any ideas where I might locate parts like this?

Thanks,
Mark

Answer
There are two primary styles of tach for the spitfire, a big steel bell version, and a smaller aluminum bell; I believe you have the steel bell version.  If so,

1) You can ask around the forums on triumphspitfire.com or http://members.boardhost.com/GT6-Spitfire/ and others.

2) You can try victoria british, moss motors, spit bits and The Roadster Factory, they may have the parts.  Look in their on line catalog blow up pictures for the parts you need.

3) If you can't locate one, contact me off list; I have several old steel bell distributors, and I pull out the mechanical tach parts for my purposes & throw away.  I probably have a gear and cap laying around I can ship you.
