Triumph Repair: starting problems on GT6, sanity check, compression tests

Question
Hi Scot,I recently rebuilt my 2 litre triumph engine to a high standard ,but it wont start unless I use spray starter.I have fitted two different pairs of fully serviced carbs but still no start and when I take the plugs out they are wet with fuel. The compression averages at 105 lbs for the 6 cylinders which I cant understand when the engine has had a rebore and new pistons and rings ,is this my problem? Everything thing else, the igniton, the engine timing ,fuel delivery to the carbs all checks out as good. Please help this is very frustrating.
Many thanks.

Answer
Rings require time running under a load to seat; so don't worry about the compression figures until you've run in the engine; compression tests on a fresh rebuild is more of a go/no-go sanity check.

You can check the valve lash to make sure you are in spec; if you have the valves too tight at this point, it can lead to the issues.

Since the plugs are wet with fuel, you've fouled them and they need to be changed.  YOu need to find the source of the extra fuel getting in, which could be as simple as a float level.

Pull the plugs and crank the engine; you will likely get a mist/spray of fuel if you have a puddle or cylinder full of fuel.
