Triumph Repair: Spitfire Overdrive tranny - how to check it out, transmission functions, gear lever

Hi Scott, I have a complete (minus gear lever) used Spitfire 1500 overdrive transmission that I am going to install in my '79 MG Midget 1500. What is the best way to check it out befor I Install it, including the electrical components, wiring as well as the normal transmission functions? I do not want to completely disassemble the tranny or the OD unit .. also, any "tips" would be appreciated ..
